Love Will Show The Way...
Many children currently make their home in Big Mama's modest home on Fort Lauderdale's west side and many more find temporary shelter there. Kids from all kinds of backgrounds, all races, and all ethnic groups have found a haven with Big Mama over the years. They also find much more - a chance to overcome the hardships of their young lives and move forward. Most come from homes with drug, alcohol, poverty, and violence related problems.
Big Mama explains her philosophy of child rearing. "I show my kids what love, caring, and self-reliance are. I want to show them how to love themselves, so that they can love others. I tell them that whatever problems they have, I'm here for them. They can come and speak to me about anything. Many of them have never experienced this kind of support. I also urge them to pray and use the wisdom and knowledge they have to overcome their problems.
The "Shut Ins", held 4 times each year, are especially popular. Area kids bring their clothes and sleeping bags and spend several full days at the church, learning to work through problems and praying for guidance. Parents help out by delivering and cooking food. Monthly family-oriented events are also held, including special Mother's Day and Father's Day celebrations.
Big Mama also finds time to mentor the students at New River Middle School. Ms. Karen Thomas is the secretary for the 7th grade, working closely with Assistant Principal Ms. Rhoda Gawlowski. Ms. Thomas enthusiastically expressed the school's appreciation for Big Mama's tireless contributions. "I have never, ever met a person like her - she's an angel on this earth. She helps everyone in our school - the children, the parents, members of the community. I don't know how she does it, but she manages to find time to spend with every student who seeks her out. She selflessly feeds and clothes any child in need."
Among her many civic awards, Big Mama was honored as Community Activist of the Year 2001 by the Vanguard Chronicle.
